Most new parents assume a will is something you do later, when there's a house, real savings, "actual" assets. But the single most important thing a will does for a young family has nothing to do with money: it names a guardian for your child.
What happens without one?
If both parents pass away without a will, a court decides who raises your child, without your input. The judge may choose exactly who you would have chosen. Or not. Family members can disagree, and the process can take months at the worst possible time.
The good news
For most young families, a basic estate plan is simpler and more affordable than expected. A typical starter package covers:
- A will naming a guardian and how assets pass
- Beneficiary designations that actually match your will
- A healthcare proxy and power of attorney
It usually takes one or two meetings. The peace of mind lasts a lot longer.
